7

Not far from my hotel was the district of the old city called the Albergheria:a maze of narrow, twisting streets.Apart from a forest of TV aerials and small shrines to the Virgin Mary, now lit by electric candles,it is a part of Palermo almost untouched by time.Balconies hang out over the streets with lines of washing strun between them.Women sit sewing on the doorsteps.Between the houses are tiny workshops where men still works at the city's ancient and traditional crafts.

I made my way along one of the streets. The whistling of the caged birds, which seemed to hang at every open window, rose above the noise of the general bustle. There were barrows selling fruit and vegetatbles.Half -priced cigarettes were displayed on the bonnet of a car.A small boy tried to sell me a bag of lemoms. As he ran off,I saw him snatch the wallet from the back pocket of an unwary stallholder.

A man was walking in fromt of me.He half turned and I recognised him as the man from the phtographer's shop.I had the photographs in my pocket. If I couldn't return them,I might at least find out when the shop would be open. The man walked quickly. Before I could catch up with him,we had come out into the Via Marqueda.I saw him make a near suicide dash through the speeding traffic to the other side of the street.By the time I could follow,I had lost him.I tried the side street where I had last seen him.I didn't find the man,but I did find myself in Palermo's fish market.

I had seen nothing like it.Tunny or ‘tuna’is a commom fish in Sicily, but the one on the fishmoger's slab in front of me was a positive giant. Its huge jaws had been propped open with a stick and, like a guard of honour, the heads of two sward fish had been placed on either side with their swards pointing upward.

It was then that I spotted the photographer again. He was talking to someone at the back of the fish shop.I was about to go inside when I realised that things had gong suddenly quiet.A large Mercedes had appeared in the market. From it was stepping the man in my photographs!Who interested me most, the photographer(10),or the man whose appearance could silence a fish market(4)?( 文章阅读网:www.sanwen.net )

8,workshop:

9,make one’s way:往前走,前进

10,The whistling of the caged birds, which seemed to hang at every open window, above the noise of the general bustle. The whistling···rose above···;which seemed to hang at every open window:which引导非限制性定语从句,关系代词在从句中作主语,指代鸟笼。
