Einstein'sgenius,characterizedequallybylogicalclarityandcreativeimagination,succeededinremoldingandwideningtheimposingedificewhosefoundationshadbeenlaidbyNewton'sgreatwork.Withintheframeoftherelativitytheory,demandingaformulationofthelawsofnatureindependentoftheobserverandemphasizingthesingularroleofthespeedoflight,gravitationaleffectslosttheirisolatedpositionandappearedasanintegralpartofageneralkinematicdescription,capableofverificationbyrefinedastronomicalobservations.Moreover,Einstein'srecognitionoftheequivalenceofmassandenergyshouldproveaninvaluableguideintheexplorationofatomicphenomena.

ThesamespiritthatcharacterizedEinstein'suniquescientificachievementsalsomarkedhisattitudeinallhumanrelations.Notwithstandingtheincreasingreverencewhichpeopleeverywherefeltforhisattainmentsandcharacter,hebehavedwithunchangingnaturalmodestyandexpressedhimselfwithasubtleandcharminghumor.Hewasalwayspreparedtohelppeopleindifficultiesofanykind,andtohim,whohimselfhadexperiencedtheevilsofracialprejudice,thepromotionofunderstandingamongnationswasaforemostendeavor.Hisearnestadmonitionsontheresponsibilityinvolvedinourrapidlygrowingmasteryoftheforcesofnaturewillsurelyhelptomeetthechallengetocivilizationintheproperspirit.
