有时候拥抱或握手所能表达出的切身感受，要比话语来得好。我常问那些丧亲者，什么是让他们印象最深刻的讯息，他们总是一再地说，那时人家讲了些什么话都不记得了，但是那天来到家里的人，他们总都记得。

到丧亲者家中吊唁时，态度要委婉坦然，有同情心。同情心是指从怜悯进入到感同身受，是用一种温厚的方式对他们敞开胸怀。这意味着要把个人的忧虑和需要搁一边，完全把自己腾出来，与丧亲悲痛之人“同在”。

表达同情通常是什么话也不要说。我看到一位牧师的表现就是一个很好的例子。那位牧师来到逝者的床边，和亲属们一起祷告之后，便进到客厅，脱下外衣，解下领带，然后在一张摇椅上坐下，一言不发。

我们安宁疗护的义工一看到那位牧师坐镇下来，便明白自己该做的已经告一段落，不必再逗留下去。牧师会照料逝者的妻子，一直到其他亲属赶来。他并没有说什么话，但整个屋子都能因他的存在而感受到那份悲悯。

不得体的客套话

人们在内心不安或讲不出话时，通常会说些陈词套话。我和很多有过丧亲之痛的人谈话得知，当一个人刚刚失去所爱时，最不适宜向他们讲些客套话。老掉牙的客套话太做作，太没有意义，一点都帮不上什么忙。事实上，那会让哀戚的人觉得不被人了解，更感到孤单。
