Xiamenwasfoundedin1394atthebeginningoftheMingdynastyasacenterofdefenseagainstcoastalpirates.Itsprosperitywasduetoitsdeepwatershelteredharbor,thatsupplantednearbyQuanzhou,theportthathadbeenthecenterofthemaritimetradewiththeIndies.
