我国古人十分重视各地方言的统一，于是出现了“雅言”。《辞海·雅言》条说：“雅言，古时称‘共同语’，同‘方言’对称。”孔颖达在《正文》中说：“雅言，正言也。”“雅言”就是我国最早的古代通用语，相当于现在的普通话。
据史料记载，我国最早的“雅言”是以周朝地方语言为基础，周朝的国都丰镐(今西安西北)地区的语言为当时的全国雅言。孔子在鲁国讲学，他的三千弟-子来自四面八方，孔子正是用雅言来讲学的。《论语·述而第七》中说：“子所雅言，《诗》《书》、执礼，皆雅言也。”
周以后，各朝随着国都的迁移，雅言的基础方言也随之修正，但多数仍以京城语言为标准。
晋朝以后，先有“五胡乱华”，接下来便是长达200余年的南北分治。北方游牧民族入主中原，对那里的文化和语言带来巨大的冲击，从周朝以来一直作为民族共同语的雅言逐渐消失。值得一提的是，在这—时期，岭南地区保持较为稳定的局面，由中原雅言演变而成的粤语没有发生中原汉语那样的变化，一直保持着原来的音系。“中古之塞擦音声母的分化，鼻音韵尾的合流，塞音韵尾的弱化和脱落、浊上归去、入派三声这些在许多方言普遍发生的变化都被粤方言拒绝了。”(李如龙《方言与文化的宏观研究》)因此，雅言在今天的北方和中原已经荡然无存，它的大量因素却保存于今天的粤语。
粤语保存着古代雅言的大量因素，可以通过粤语与《切韵》音系的对照证实。《切韵》是我国最早一部音韵学著作，成书于隋朝初年，所记录的是南朝时期读书人的音系，也就是晚期雅言的音系。以《切韵》音系跟今天汉语七大方言进行对照，可以看出，保存这个音系最多最完整的是粤语。以古代的入声为例，北方的汉语方言由于受游牧民族语言影响，塞音韵尾普遍脱离，因此，现在这—带的人们完全不知道入声是怎么一回事。其他汉语方言虽然保存一些入声，却不完整。粤语由于拒绝了“入派三声”这一变化规律，所以保存着古代的全套入声，同鼻音韵尾整齐对应。
